FAQs

What are the requirements to enter into training with HAVEN?

Veterans with a service connected disability, including MST, may apply for acceptance into the training program.

A DD214 indicating an honorable discharge is also a requirement.

Does HAVEN provide fully trained service dogs?

At this time we teach veterans to train a dog of their own to be a service dog. Our goal for the future is to also provide fully trained service dogs.

If I have a dog will it be accepted into training with me?

The potential for service dog training will be evaluated. The ideal age for a dog to enter into training is between nine months to two years of age. Some exceptions may be made. Whenever possible, HAVEN will offer a puppy class. However, there is no guarantee that any dog will be successful in continuing on to service dog training.

What are the indicators my dog does not have potential for service dog training?

Age or health related issues such as hip dysplasia, mobility concerns, deafness, vision difficulty, fearfulness, anxiety, any guarding behaviors, sensitivity to being handled, or lack of interest in training.
The size of the dog is important in determining the service dog tasks that may be trained.
Keep in mind that not every dog wants to be a service dog.

How long does it take to train a service dog?

The total training time may vary from eighteen months to two years depending on the age of the dog.

What if I don't have a dog or the dog I do have does not meet the requirements for training?

We will assist you in locating a dog from a shelter or rescue organization. This will take time to find a good match. HAVEN does not provide funds for the adoption fee.

Is it helpful to have family members or a friend participate in training?

Yes! A service dog becomes a family member. Also, having a training partner will result in better communication with everyone in daily contact.

What is the fee for training my dog to be a service dog?

HAVEN requires a non-refundable fee of $100 which is used to cover supplies for another vet in a future training class.

What type of equipment is used for training?

Six foot leashes, front clip harnesses, and Gentle Leader head-collars are acceptable. Metal collars of any type, shock collars, or any other aversive training equipment is not allowed. Use of correction based training will exclude a team from further training with HAVEN.

What do I do to begin the application process?

Consult with your provider regarding service dog training. The provider will be required to complete a form needed by HAVEN to enter training. The form to be completed by you and your provider is available on the website. An interview will be scheduled to determine the readiness for training. Any other questions can be addressed by email: havenmke@gmail.com
